Archived Armor of the Samurai Items

Nuinobe do with 16 Plate Kabuto Yoroi

Momoyama {1573 -1600} to early Edo period {1600  -1868} yoroi.
A pale orange laced nuinobe do fitted wth o'sode & lower parts of the do skirts {kusazuri}, lacing. Being iro iro odoshi, with matching designs on the o'sode & kabuto lames and also the menpo. This military design in the armor lacing can be traced

Kabuto is a brown lacquered sixteen plate with four stage ornate bronze tehen kanemono. Bronze fitting to the rear with silk regalia, three lame shikoro , with the iro iro odoshi lacing with military design as previously mentioned. "fukigaeshi", {kabuto turn backs}, bears bronze " suemonkanamono "mon"  on printed leather. Bronze trimmed "mabisashi" is covered with printed leather & ornate bronze fittings. Maedate mountings are very ornate gilded bronze with cherry blossom and sukashi designs that are also on each plate of the kasazuri. Central piece of the maedate fittings is bronze with a diamond designed mon. The large maedate horns are solid gold with sukashi designs. Interior liner of the kabuto is stitched silk with printed leather trim & is in excellent condition. Chin strap is orange colored hemp. Menpo is brown lacquered with four lame ornate designed " shikoro ". Interior is brown lacquered and bears a signature .
O'sode are magnificent. Interior of the o'sode are in very fine condition! "gote" are brown lacquered, ornate iron with chain mail between the rafts. Interior is nishiki silk and blue hemp, all in excellent condition. Shino haidate with nishiki textile and printed leather trim. Light wear on the exterior nishiki. Interior is nishiki with blue hemp liner and ivory buttons all excellent condition. Suneate are brown lacquered with nishiki trim and blue hemp inner liner all in very good condition. Leather samurai boots with leather trim and nishiki inner liner and silk bindings are in good condition though some exterior wear to the black fur. Overall condition of this fine yori is very good.
There is a fine leather covered " yoribitsu " armor box  with this set of yoroi .
 

A Momoyama / Edo Period, "YOROI"

With documented provenance, owned by the samurai "SHINROKURO UEMURA" born in 1579 died in 1641 at the age of 62.

UEMURA Was samurai to the "TAKATORI HAN" of then "SARUGA" prefecture, now known as SHIZUOKA. DAIMYO "IEYASU HIDETADA IEMITSU" Lord of land holdings NIMAN GOSEN KOKU, {250,000 KOKU), which would have been an average size rural town and all of the farm holdings in its vicinity in Edo period.
Black lacquered 6 KEN AKODA GATA SUJI - KABUTO, {a style of helmet that developed in the Momoyama period}. With black lacquered 4 lame "SHIKORO", with blue silk lacing.
"MAEDATE", is a black lacquered stem with the feathers of a mountain pheasant. Interior of the kabuto has stitched hemp liner, brown leather sweatband and cinnabar red inner visor. Unrestored condition.
Menpo is lacquered russet iron finish, with close cropped moustache, gilded teeth, very finely forged facial features. Black lacquered 4 lame "YODAREKAKE", with dark blue "KIBIKI ODOSHI". Interior of the menpo is a deep cinnabar red lacquer.

"TSUTU GOTE", with wide black lacquered forearm and upper arm plates with chain mail, Probably of KAGA manufacture. Exterior "NISHIKI" {silk brocade}, textile has some wear, but it is the original textile. Interior liner is dark blue hemp with dark blue silk trim and in very good condition. Interior of the armored hands are soft deer skin leather. Fasteners are thick silk lacing.

"DOU" is black lacquered with 2 gilded leather dragons, front and rear. Rear of the "DOU" is the ornate bronze "MON" of the UEMURA FAMILY. Also there is a large bronze "ICHIMONJI KIKYO" {Ornate bronze Chrysanthemum Hasso Byo - ornamental metal head-} for hanging the "DOU".

"SHINO HAIDATE" of wide, lacquered iron plates connected with chain mail on printed leather backing. Interior of "HAIDATE is blue hemp with silk trim and "NISHIKI" fasteners.

"SUNEATE" are black lacquered with chain mail and printed leather trim over "NISHIKI". Interior liner of "SUNEATE: is blue hemp textile.

 A fine "YORIBITSU", is included.
Overall condition is very good.
With copy of the printed provenance in Japanese.
 

EDO PERIOD " YOROI "

Black lacquered 32 Ken "KABUTO", with 4 stage ornate bronze with foliate design "TEHEN-KANAMONO", 4 Lame "SHIKORO", with very handsome sky blue and plum colored "KEBIKI ODASHI" lacing.
Well balanced and neat "FUKIGAESHI" , with a double mounting for the "MAEDATE". Interior liner is stitched brown hemp, interior visor is cinnabar red lacquer, sweat band is plum colored leather. Mint condition.

"MAEDATE", is a ornate lacquered wood and gilded bronze chrysanthemum in fool bloom, under a fill moon. Perfect condition.

"MENPO", is black lacquered, with a rare pin and chain fitting to the nose piece, with four lame black lacquered throat protector, with orange and plum colored "KEBIKI ODASHI". Interior of the Menpo is cinnabar red lacquer. *99.9% perfect condition.

"SODE" are 6 lame black lacquered with dark blue and contrasting light blue "KEBIKI ODASHI". Interior is a beautiful brown hemp with dark blue silk trim. Each "SODE" is fitted with bronze fittings and has original orange colored silk regalia *99% perfect.

"ODA GOTE", are brown lacquered with characteristic gourd shaped plates {these represent money pouches }, applied over the forearm and upper arm, plates are closely pleated with rows of tiny rivets at each end. Chain mail is very clean and no rust. Interior is a beautiful dark blue hemp with underside of sleeve is bottle green with black flower designs. Thick dark blue silk lacing. MINT

"DOU" is black lacquered with "KEBIKI ODASHI" and is 97% perfect, with light wear only to the inner silk liner at the back of the neck "SODE" are also fitted to the do so there are TWO ORIGINAL SETS.

"IKEDA HAIDATE", {armored thigh protectors}, are dark blue hemp with dark blue silk trim and brown lacquered armor plates, with matching textile to the "GOTE". 99% mint condition.

"SUNEATE", are black lacquered armor plates with brown leather and matching textile to "GOTE". *Mint.

There is a black lacquered  "YORIBITSU", {Storage box}, with gilt mon. The Yoroi looks to have been fully and professionally restored at the end of the Edo period.
Overall condition is exceptionally good.
