Iron Pointed Jingasa War Hat

Magnificent Edo Period 17 th century samurai " Jingasa - Kabuto " of pointed form metal, covered with black lacquered leather.

This Jingasa is from one of the most famous samurai family's and stories in Japanese history:

the "47 RONIN"

In the year 1701 "ASANO" who was the lord of  "AKO" lashed out at a corrupt Court Official and set in motion one of the bloodiest vendetta's in Japanese Feudal History.
These events shocked the country and brought the Shogun himself to a legal and moral impasse.

When it was over, ending with the " Seppuku " of the 47 Loyal Retainers or 47 Ronin, Japan had a new set of heroes: the Ex-Samurai of Ako.

The gilt mon of the crossed Hawk Feathers inside a  "W" shaped gilt design (that represents the castle shape of AKO) is the Japanese "Mon" or family crest of "Lord Asano" from the Ako castle in the town of Ako in Japan where the story began.

Top ornament in brass and a "Agemaki - ring" at the back

This fine Jingasa is unique in its construction of metal plate with black lacquered leather cover, nearing a fine and ornate four stage copper "Tehen Kanemono" , or metal peak and a bronze fitting for silk regalia on the rear.

Most Jingasa of this style are lacquered leather without ornamental metal fittings or elaborate mon.

The interior bears a signature that maybe the maker's or the owner's.

There is some wear commensurate with it's age.
